Prepare for Your K12 Reading Teacher License*

Frustrated with trying to break through to students who just aren't advancing? Our graduates say that the K-12 Reading Teacher program is a game-changer. Alumni are amazed at the world of new strategies available for teaching reading, some methods designed specifically by our reading program faculty. If you are looking to help students who are stuck in one place with their literacy skills than look no further than the K-12 Reading Teacher program at Saint Mary's. Through this program, you will become an expert in developing your student's foundational literacy skills while you are teaching content courses. Understand the process of learning to read and design developmentally-appropriate instruction that advances students' reading proficiency. Our graduates excel at assessing the reading development of individual students and groups of students and know how to use assessment data to design reading curriculum. Better integrate your new knowledge of reading with your understanding of pedagogy, students, learning, and classroom management in order to establish a reading-friendly classroom environment inclusive of all students.

The convenient, one Saturday per month format is great for working teachers to complete the Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading in one of our many cohort locations. The Master of Arts program completion is typically offered on the Twin Cities Campus in a Saturday format. Graduates usually complete the initial 17 credits for licensure preparation in 16 months. Those seeking the M.A. in Literacy Education complete the licensure prep and master's degree in a little over 2.5 years.

Licensure Preparation

This program is geared toward educators who already hold a classroom teaching license and are seeking a Minnesota Reading Teacher license. Options include our 17 credit Graduate Certificate in K-12 Reading Teacher program that will prepare you for the K-12 Reading license in Minnesota or the 316 Reading Teacher license in Wisconsin. Once you have finished licensure preparation as a K-12 Reading Teacher, you can continue on to complete 17 additional credits to earn the Master of Arts in Literacy Education which includes licensure preparation in Minnesota as a K-12 Reading Leader. Wisconsin candidates become Reading Specialists once portfolio and other licensure requirements are met.

Career Options

This program prepares you for licensure as a reading teacher in Minnesota. A majority of graduates are classroom teachers in public or private schools and use this program to add to their credentials and expand their expertise.Others pursue career opportunities in fields such as reading teachers and district wide literacy experts.

Routes to Completion

The credit amounts vary depending on what pathway you choose to complete.

Option One: 17 credits
K-12 Reading Teacher Graduate Certificate (licensure preparation and graduate certificate) 

Option Two: 34 credits
M.A. in Literacy Education (licensure preparation and master's) 

Option Three: 35 credits
M.A. in Education with K-12 Reading Specialization (licensure preparation and master's)

Course Information

The program prepares you to develop, implement, and supervise K-12 reading curriculum in district level positions or to coach and consult with teacher colleagues as a K-12 Reading Teacher specialist. The addition of seven courses, focused on research-based intervention strategies for the development of reading and writing from kindergarten through community college, results in an M.A. in Literacy Education.

Applicants must submit:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Non-refundable application fee
  3. Official transcripts posting the applicant’s completed master's degree
  4. Other relevant official transcripts documenting potential transfer credits
  5. International transcripts must be evaluated by a university-accepted evaluator
  6. A reflective essay which includes a brief description of the applicant’s background, training, and experience, a description of the areas the applicant considers to be their strengths and areas in which the applicant wishes to develop greater strengths and abilities, and any personal information the applicant wishes to share
  7. Two recommendations that verify professional and/or volunteer experience and/or academic ability
  8. A current résumé listing educational background and work experience
  9. Applicants with international transcripts may require an English language proficiency exam.
