A comprehensive major designed for students who plan to achieve an instrumental music teaching career in a public or private school. The music education-instrumental degree program meets the Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements for a license in instrumental and classroom music education K-12. For students interested in vocal education, Saint Mary's offers the music education-vocal major. Highly motivated students with strengths in both vocal and instrumental music may wish to complete a double (vocal and instrumental) licensure program.
Teaching, reaching, and stimulating middle and high school learners takes strong skills and superior teacher preparation. Saint Mary's School of Education is committed to excellent faculty, small class sizes, and real-world experience. This, in turn, prepares secondary education teachers to relate to students, helping to launch learners toward future success. Saint Mary's School of Education helps secondary education majors create a challenging and positive learning environment for all learners, including those with diverse backgrounds and needs. Toward that objective, strong emphasis is placed on gaining extensive field experience in a variety of settings prior to graduation. Faculty connect these field experiences to coursework, combining theory and practice, modeling effective instruction, providing relevant context, and building confidence to address the variety of situations future teachers will encounter.
A majority of music education graduates pursue classroom teaching in public or private elementary, middle, or high schools. Others may go on to seek advanced degrees from Saint Mary's in special education, literacy, educational administration, curriculum and instruction, or school counseling. It is also possible to pursue graduate studies in music areas not related to education.
The five-year combined degree program delays School of Education courses until the fifth year, allowing the music student to focus on developing his or her own personal musicianship and to complete the music education methods courses prior to enrolling in the M.A. in Teaching program.
This residential, four-year program is offered on our Winona Campus, with daytime classes and a full student life experience.
In addition to this and the many other majors offered at Saint Mary's, you can enhance your education with a minor in a subject that interests you.
