Licensure Preparation at Saint Mary's

The Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for adults who have a bachelor's degree and are seeking a tier 4 Minnesota teaching license for the first time. However, the program also works with current tier 4 teachers looking to add to or expand your current teaching license subjects/grades. Earning your first teaching license and M.A. in Teaching degree happens in as little as one year at the Winona Campus or two to three years at the Twin Cities Campus. The timeline and options for current teachers looking to gain additional credentials will be specific to your situation so give us a call to discuss what you are looking to accomplish!

Everything You Need for Your Teaching Toolbox

Teaching options include licensure as an elementary, middle and/or high school teacher. You can also choose a subject area to specialize in such as math, science, social studies, English, Spanish, art or music. This program incorporates everything you need to prepare as a teacher in Minnesota including preparation for the Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams (MTLE). You will take education coursework, subject area specialization courses (if applicable), complete field experiences in real K-12 classroom settings and even have the opportunity to student teach abroad! If you are missing some content coursework, no worries! We do not require pre-requisite courses to qualify for admission. After a robust transcript analysis, our staff will advise you on any subject-specific courses you may need to take in addition to the master's courses in order for the state to grant your teaching license.

Students pursuing a teaching license at Saint Mary's can choose from the following options:

Additional licensure preparation areas offered through Saint Mary's (though not included within the M.A. in Teaching degree):

  • English as a Second Language (ESL): K-12
  • Reading Teacher: K12
  • Special Education: Learning Disabilities
  • Special Education: Emotional/Behavioral Disorders
  • Special Education: Autism Spectrum Disorder


It is also critical for you to be able to put theory into practice. Your time in the program includes field experience and student teaching, which ensure that you have practiced your skills under the guidance of a mentor subject teacher and university mentor.


Looking to get licensed fast? Complete licensure preparation requirements and your master's degree in one year (subject courses may extend timeframe). Live on or near campus in Winona, MN and take full-time courses with the opportunity to complete some student teaching abroad. Small class sizes and a cohort model are perfect for those looking for a supportive community of learners and an accelerated route to teacher licensure.


The Twin Cities Campus offers licensure preparation coursework in the evenings and on some Saturdays. The timeline for program completion varies depending on licensure/subject area. A flexible model allows you to take courses as they fit your schedule so that you can continue working full time up until the semester you student teach. Courses are taught by expert practitioner faculty and you can begin in the spring, summer and fall semesters to get started with content course any time.

Career Options

This program prepares you for licensure as a teacher in Minnesota. This program prepares you for tier 4 licensure as a teacher in Minnesota. A majority of graduates pursue classroom teaching in public or private K-12 schools. Others pursue career opportunities in fields such as higher education, corporate training or health education.

Routes to Completion

The credit amounts vary depending on what pathway you choose to complete.

Option One: Variable Credits (exact credits determined after transcript analysis from the application)
Adding an endorsement, additional content area, or expanding the scope of your current tier 4 license

Option Two: 46 credits (37 credits for licensure preparation plus 9 credits for master's degree completion)
M.A. in Teaching- elementary education

Option Three: 37 credits (28 credits for licensure preparation plus 9 credits for master's degree completion)
M.A. in Teaching- secondary or K-12 education subject

Course Information

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program provides the skills, theories, and tools to develop overall skills as a classroom teacher. Education foundations coursework pertains to classroom management, curriculum design and assessment. You will also take courses relating to your specific subject area.

Applicants must submit:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Non-refundable application fee
  3. Official transcripts posting the applicant’s completed bachelor degree
  4. Other relevant official transcripts documenting potential transfer credits
  5. International transcripts must be evaluated by a university-accepted evaluator
  6. A reflective essay which includes a brief description of the applicant’s background, training, and experience, a description of the areas the applicant considers to be their strengths and areas in which the applicant wishes to develop greater strengths and abilities, and any personal information the applicant wishes to share
  7. Two recommendations that verify professional and/or volunteer experience and/or academic ability
  8. A current résumé listing educational background and work experience
  9. Applicants with international transcripts may require an English language proficiency exam.

You are encouraged to apply at any time throughout the year. Those accepted early can work with their program advisor to begin taking subject area coursework prior to the start of the licensure preparation classes.
