Program Overview

Study in theatre at Saint Mary's offers students learning opportunities in acting/directing, musical theatre, dance, design/technology, playwriting, stage management, and research.

The theatre core includes script analysis, stage craft, acting, directing, theatre history, theatre design, technical theatre lab, career development, and dramatic theory. All theatre majors also participate in a London study abroad program.

Dance students complete courses in anatomy and kinesiology, dance history, dance composition, and dance education, as well as numerous dance technique courses.

Career Options

Faculty at Saint Mary's prepare graduating majors to explore entry-level positions in theatre or dance, or to pursue further graduate studies in these art forms. In addition, theatre study provides for future pursuit of theatre and dance opportunities, whether as a profession, hobby, or as a personal source of enjoyment.

Taking Classes

This residential, four-year program is offered on our Winona Campus, with daytime classes and a full student life experience.

Course Information

Designed for students considering dance careers, coursework includes a theatre core, and courses in anatomy and kinesiology, dance history, dance composition, and dance education, as well as numerous dance technique courses. Students are expected to participate in the London theatre semester in London, England.

Applicants must submit:

  1. A completed application. Saint Mary's has an online application and also accepts the Common Application.
  2. Official high school transcript
  3. Official Test Scores - ACT, SAT, or Classic Learning tests are accepted.
  4. An essay or brief personal statement. In 250 words or fewer, please tell us about: a significant experience you've had, an accomplishment or risk you have taken, a person who has made a difference in your life, a topic of concern to you, or anything else you think would help us learn more about you. You can also choose to submit a graded paper or write something new!
  5. Letters of Recommendation are optional.
